Justice Base

MyJustice has partnered with Justice Base to strengthen the quality of legal representation by engaging a range of legal professionals in Yangon Region and Mon State in dialogues and workshops aimed at improving criminal defence practice to better protect people’s rights and hold government actors accountable to the law. Each event will focus on fair trial rights that are consistently and commonly violated in Myanmar practice, explore the conceptual underpinnings of the rights as well as the legal basis for those rights in Myanmar, and through exercises and dialogue engage the participants in examining and confronting existing practice while exploring changes in practice that lawyers can use to address the violation. The events will use a participatory learning approach to catalyse interest and engagement from lawyers, followed by a call to action built upon outcomes of participant discussions. Justice Base will also follow up with lawyers between events to learn about and document the challenges they face in implementing changes in practice. Additionally, Justice Base will build capacity of members of the media in MyJustice target areas to understand criminal procedure and the right to fair trial in the Myanmar context.
