Improving Access to Justice and Legal Aid for the Poor and Vulnerable in Yangon

Yangon Justice Centre provides free legal aid to the poor, marginalised and otherwise disadvantaged people. While legal advice is provided in all cases, representation in courts is limited to criminal defence cases. Yangon Justice Centre (YJC) seeks to improve access to justice by providing-

  1. Legal representation, advice and assistance to poor, marginalised and otherwise disadvantaged people in the Yangon area;
  2. Legal training to selected paralegals who thereby support their communities;
  3. Legal awareness sessions to community members; and legal information support to clients’ family members;
  4. Legal training to university students

YJC has a main office in Kyauk Tada Township and two satellite offices in Hlaing Thar Yar and Khayan townships. It is also implementing a University Legal Clinic activity to train law student on realities of legal practice, convene Mock Trails and Moot Court at the universities, and provide four-week internship programme for law students.
